Including the fact that it was photographed, beautifully framed by my daughter, hanging over the fireplace, unavoidably reflecting the ceiling fixture.

Of course, Sarah's friends immediately think she owns a Georgia O'Keeffe painting! However, during my water colour painting phase, I was not consciously thinking O'Keeffe. At the time, I was taking a course in water colour painting, offered by an Asian artist, who insisted that we first handle the flowers themselves to feel and understand their structure.

So, the 'still life' consisted of a bunch of much handled cut flowers spread on a table - leaving us to create the still life. I could not keep an expressive form from the final pieces, as seen in The Dandelion. And, being a former tabloid reporter, the habit of provocative titling remains an irresistible addiction.

When a teenager, I was a self-taught water colour painter, and was often called upon to make posters for shopkeepers.

GLOBAL WARMING series - The Dandelion

Enlarge all

The dandelion will grow anywhere and reflect whatever is in the soil that nurtures it. Hence, Dandelion.

or, as the Sun and Moon: the large yellow flower-heads made up of a great many separate little flower tubes, and the ball of starry down said to be one of the most beautiful things in the flower world.

This watercolour (Size: 30" x 40" framed) came about because I was thinking about the effects of Global Warming and how nature is forever transforming itself - adapting not only to what mankind puts into the soil, but also to evolutionary changes that occur as the world turns.

NUDES IN WOOD (Series #2)

Size: 23" x 32"

Paper: Rice

This print, made from driftwood, already shaped on one side to suggest a torso, was executed on a Harold Wright press bed size of 30" x 48". The first class was all about woodcut because, at that time, an investment had not yet been made in a fully equipped workshop. For woodcut, all that was needed was a set of 12 cutting tools (99c), a piece of hard wood, and a magic marker for sketching. No fine art drawing expected here!

Briefly, a revival of interest in printmaking by artists in LA had begun to spread across the country, compelling universities and workshops to offer instruction. Perlmutter was Professor of Painting at the Corcoran and a professional lithographer at home. He soon developed a Department of Printmaking, one of the first on the east coast to pick up on what became a popular, inexpensive form of making art. For the next few years an explosion of experimental prints emerged, utilizing many different materials and papers.

Perlmutter was the first innovative art teacher that I had ever met. He liked to break the rules! Drawing to scale, as I had learned to do, painfully, at night schools in London, went out the window.

One day, visiting the Potomac Boat House: while husband John went sailing, I made a few clumsy looking sketches with my magic marker

Being new to the country and to Washington, DC. I did not know that I was sketching famed Key Bridge, spanning the Potomac river!

I loved the boating scene. The Sun Fish was a boat we enjoyed. But, first, he had to build his own catamaran! It took months.

Boat slips were expensive. We decided not to join a club. Eventually, we found Hains Point, a 300+ recreation park, located between Washington Channel and the Potomac river on the south side of the Tidal Basin. In those days it was a friendly area where you could launch a boat, sharing make shift facilities with others.

My detailed sketch for the bridge did not end up on the woodblock. The wood was so hard to gauge that cuts and blisters were all I could boast about. The steamboat was enough already! From that day on I used soft woods, having found out later in class that hard wood was a fetish of the old school!

So this woodcut is just, AN UNFINISHED BRIDGE. End of first lesson!

Jack Perlmutter, 86, died in 2006. He called himself an abstract realist. A Washington Post article once described him as, "a man of tremendous vitality, with the kind of alert, inquiring mind that extends the frontiers of the creative process".

He certainly did that for me.

NUDES IN WOOD

This print was not executed on the press above, borrowed from my friend, master printmaker Dan Welden. This is a table-top press, the bed measuring 12 1/4" x 24". This well meaning Mayor did what he had to do, but at the temporary cost of a kindlier and greener city. Various cultural group oppositions couldn't wait to spoil his long term good intentions.

As the first and only African American to hold the office (the only democrat to this day), he defeated Edward I. Koch in 1989. It was uphill work all the way, until Rudolph W. Giuliani, a republican, defeated him after his fourth term in office.

Dinkin's popularity declined as he was forced to overcome a $1.8 billion budget deficit when he entered office. Soon, however, the city had a $200 million dollar surplus but, by all accounts, his term was marked by polarizing events. Instead of achieving his pledge to heal the racial diversity, a "gorgeous mosaic" mix of people, with kindlier approaches than his predecessor (and crime actually declined in the last 36 months of his term), he failed because he was seen to be too weak and indecisive for the job. I hold my breath for President Obama. Yes, he can do it!

I think I was reading THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS by Albert Camus at the time!

DRIFTWOOD SERIES - AWASH by Brenda Bryant

My long time friend, Brenda Bryant, who lives in New South Wales, has just written a haiku for the woodblock print DRIFTWOOD above, knowing how much I like the combination of haiku and imagery in Asian art. Godsen's (sic) "Little Miss Muffet," which appears to be a variation on the theme used by Picasso in "Demoniselles d'Avignon." (sic)

(Sixty-seventh Annual National Exhibition of the Washington Water Color Association at the Smithsonian. In those days the WWCA included prints in its water color exhibits).

I was thrilled with the comment but, in retrospect, the connection remains a mystery to me, unless he was referring to the experimental restructuring of the traditional print format, and changed image of Muffet (intended), though it was not inspired by the ground breaking imagery of Les Demoiselles of d'Avignon of 1907. I did not read about Picasso until the mid 1970s when, belatedly, I got a 'formal' (pioneering a self-designed) interdisciplinary education at University Without Walls, Hofstra University, Long Island, NY, earning a B.A. degree.

LOOKING FORWARD TO April 17, 2009, New York Times and Roberta Smith on REASSESSING PICASSO:

Smith writes: "In his catalog essay Mr. Richardson writes that Picasso said that technique was important, 'on condition that one has so much ....that it completely ceases to exist.

But according to a short film playing in a small side gallery (at the Gagosian in Chelsea), Picasso also said that 'unless your picture goes wrong, it will be no good.'
